<image:title>About Me - Do you feel stuck?</image:title>
<image:caption>You’ve worked hard to make things in your life work, but you’re not satisfied or happy. You’re isolated and lonely, and the pain only gets worse as time goes by. You’re accomplished in the external world, and yet, you feel numb and alone when you’re by yourself. Some days you overeat, or have an extra glass of wine or two, or sleep too much just to avoid the suffering you’re going through. You’re so stuck in sadness and grief and despair that you feel close to a breakdown. Nothing stops the pain — no matter how busy you stay at work or how much you pretend that living like this is good enough. You wish you could just trust other people, feel safe, and be happy.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Me - It doesn’t have to be this way.</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m Emily Slough (she/her/hers), a licensed clinical social worker. I help millennials who are struggling to cope throughout daily life with depression, anxiety, low self esteem, and past trauma to learn how to love themselves and navigate the challenges of relationships, work, and whatever else life throws at you. There won’t be homework and worksheets (unless you’re into that kind of thing, I’ve got some good ones!), but there will be humor and sarcasm, even in the midst of working through the pain. I am direct, while also validating, holding, and compassionate. As I encourage my clients to be vulnerable, I will do the same. I will ease the uncomfortable process of therapy by having our sessions be more conversational. I’ve been on both sides of the couch, I know how intimidating and scary going to therapy can be. Just reaching out is vulnerable and brave. I've gotten advanced training on all things trauma and specialized in my practice so that I can fully show up with strategies that work for you. Whether you are a talker, strong and silent, and whatever type of bad experience you've been through- I've got the tools and strategies that really work. And, if what we do doesn't work, I'll change it up or refer you out. I care more about you actually healing and making progress and living a healed life full of joy than anything else.</image:caption>

You’ll begin to understand why you think the way you think and act the way you act; by understanding this we can work toward solution and results. We will identify toxic patterns and get to the root of them. With therapy, you will have the opportunity to heal your younger self, learn to understand and validate your feelings, heal and strengthen relationships, and begin to view yourself and the world around you differently. It can be difficult for others to understand the challenges you face in your life as a result, which can make you feel more isolated or alone. LGBTQ+ people come to see me when they are working with a range of psychological issues, including: • Understanding sexual and gender identity concerns • Desiring a feeling of safety and acceptance • Navigating dating, romantic relationships, sex, and marriage • Managing adoption, surrogacy, pregnancy, and parenting issues • Impact on relationships with family and friends • Depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other psychological symptoms</image:caption>

It often helps people feel more comfortable knowing they are working with someone who shares a similar cultural background. I understand the LGBTQ+ community because I was raised in it and I am a part of it. I offer safe spaces for people living outside the heteronormative lens to explore their identity and expression of self. I encourage diversity and embrace uniqueness. <image:title>LGBTQ+ Counseling - Families and Relationships</image:title>
<image:caption>As with families, relationships can look very different between same-sex, cis, and trans partners, or in polyamorous relationships. Those whose relationships fall outside the heteronorm may feel misunderstood by therapists who are less familiar with the dynamics. People in the queer community often have multiple families. Most often these come as ‘families of origin’ and ‘chosen families.’ Many adults in the community seek to learn more about their relationship with their family of origin, to strengthen them or reconnect with loved ones. Some seek to strengthen the relationships in their chosen families or bring those members into family therapy. Whatever your motivation, I am able to help. I have a thorough understanding of the many varieties of ‘family.’ I offer you a space to explore what your family members mean to you, biological or chosen, and what you mean to them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Care To Share Counseling: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) - I’ve been where you are.</image:title>
<image:caption>Problematic behaviors evolve as a way to cope with a situation or attempt to solve a problem. While these behaviors might provide temporary relief, they often are not effective in the long term. I’m a trained DBT therapist, but what makes me unique is that I have also gone through DBT as a client. I know how it feels when your emotions take over and you can’t get them back under control how hard it can be to just get through a day. I am so passionate about DBT because I have experienced the benefits and know how well it works. I’ll help you learn how to change how you interact with your environment. The only thing you can control is you, that’s what we help you figure out how to do. When problems in your environment occur, I will coach you up on how to be effective and stay true to yourself. The DBT skills you will learn will continue to serve you for years to come.</image:caption>

<image:title>Care To Share Counseling: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) - What is DBT?</image:title>
<image:caption>DBT is based on a continuous oscillation between change and acceptance. The balance between change strategies and acceptance strategies constitutes the fundamental dialectic that gives a name to the treatment. Dialectic means “to evaluate and integrate contradictory ideas and facts in a vision that solves the apparent contradictions”. There are three basic assumptions: • All things are interconnected. • Change is constant and inevitable. • Opposites can be integrated to form a closer approximation. The balance between these positions, that is the dialectic, implies that the therapist must “sustain change and acceptance simultaneously in therapy”. Research has shown that with DBT therapy you can tame the amygdala (your flight, fight, freeze, and fawn trauma response part of your brain) and become more emotionally regulated.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It’s like taking an R-rated movie and allowing you to do your own Director cut, leaving all the parts that bother or disturb you on the cutting room floor. Then you put your version back together as a G-rated movie. When you talk about it, your word story holds the R-rated facts, but the movie playing in your mind’s eye as you tell it is the G-rated movie. There is nothing disturbing happening. The alarm is turned off in your brain and you can tell your story without re-experiencing the physical or emotional intensity. <image:title>Accelerated Resolution and Trauma Therapy - Effective trauma counseling in Colorado and Texas</image:title>
<image:caption>You don’t have to be diagnosed with PTSD for this trauma therapy to work! Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) was developed in 2008 by Laney Rosenzweig, LMFT. As a mental health clinician, Laney was trained and proficient in multiple treatment modalities, including EMDR. She quickly appreciated the therapeutic value of eye movements but also recognized the need to modify how they are used and integrated with other techniques. She created treatment protocols that are directive, standardized and easy to apply to different conditions. The genesis of ART involved integrating elements from different therapies in a unique and more effective way. ART is an elegant therapeutic system that takes the best elements of existing therapies like Gestalt, Cognitive Behavioral, Narrative, Exposure, relaxation techniques, and Brief Psycho-dynamic therapy and places them into a directive protocol which utilizes eye movements similar to those found in the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase of sleep. ART targets unresolved emotions and experiences which are stored differently and allows the brain to safely and effectively relieve distressing body sensations and restore images of past experiences properly to reduce distress. ART includes the science of memory reconsolidation and provides a re-scripting process called Voluntary Image Replacement (VIR) to assist clients in rapidly moving beyond trauma. Ultimately, this process brings great relief for people suffering from PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. (Rosenzweig, Hernandez, Long, & Street, 2021)</image:caption>

<image:title>Accelerated Resolution and Trauma Therapy - How is Accelerated Resolution Therapy different from EMDR?</image:title>
<image:caption>EMDR and ART are both based on eye movements and effective with resolving traumatic memories. ART differs from EMDR as it is more directive, structured, and works directly with physical sensations to help you stay more grounded. In fact, the creator of ART is also trained in EMDR. Research has shown that trauma can be resolved in 1-5 sessions with ART, whereas EMDR research shows that it can take up to 12 sessions. In fact, the creator of ART was originally trained in EMDR. She noticed gaps with EMDR, such as retraumatization and clients struggling between sessions, and created ART. Many ART clinicians are also trained in EMDR therapy and have made the shift to primarily using ART. ART is tighter and uses strategies directly focused on the issue at hand. In EMDR the clinician is trained to ask “what comes up now?” after eye movements and will deviate from the original issue. ART works faster than EMDR by keeping the client focused on the issue with clear direction and the use of metaphors. With ART, you don’t have to talk about the details if you don’t want. I usually describe ART as more of the kid-gloved version of EMDR, it’s more scripted and less exposing than EMDR. I’ve had numerous clients tell me that one session of ART resolved trauma that years of talk therapy couldn’t. Talking isn’t enough for trauma, we need to rewire your brain.</image:caption>

<image:title>Depression Therapy and Anxiety Counseling - You’ve been feeling it for a while.</image:title>
<image:caption>This ick, this anxiety, this creeping feeling that you need a change and you need it now. On the surface, your life is ok, but underneath you feel like you are treading water. And to be honest, you are starting to lose the energy to tread. You’re isolated and lonely, and the pain only gets worse as time goes by. You’re so accomplished in the external world, and yet, you feel so numb and alone when you’re by yourself. Some days you overeat, or have an extra glass of wine or two, or sleep too much just to avoid the suffering you’re going through. You’re so stuck in sadness and grief and despair that you feel close to a breakdown.</image:caption>

<image:title>Depression Therapy and Anxiety Counseling - You want to feel better, but don’t know what to do.</image:title>
<image:caption>Or maybe you’ve got a stressful job, with a lot of responsibility. You get plenty of positive feedback from colleagues and clients, but you don’t believe them. Even with the therapy you’ve done, things that happened in the past won’t leave you alone. You feel worthless and always take the blame when things go wrong. You feel unseen in so many of your relationships, both work and personal. You’re scared of abandonment, so you hold back from saying things to keep the peace. You keep yourself constantly engaged to avoid the work to show up for yourself and your life. When you’re too anxious or sad, you stay in non-stop busy mode, or the opposite, and you become paralyzed by depression and can’t get out of bed all day. You’re ashamed and angry with yourself.</image:caption>

<image:title>Depression Therapy and Anxiety Counseling - You think that strong and successful people aren’t supposed to need help.</image:title>
<image:caption>Maybe you’re scared to lean into those deeply painful memories of things that happened in the past. It’s too hard to remember, to feel those feelings. You’re tense and anxious. You’re not sleeping well. You’re frustrated with yourself for not dealing with things you need to get done, but when you think about it, it’s overwhelming. You keep avoiding it, but it keeps getting worse. You feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders and that at any moment you could break. You fear failure, you’ve dealt with abandonment and rejection in your life, and do whatever you can to feel worthy and that you belong. At times you’re not sure who you are; it’s hard to believe in yourself when your brain lies to you and tells you everything that’s wrong with you, that you’re broken.</image:caption>

<image:title>Depression Therapy and Anxiety Counseling - I can help you break free from the past.</image:title>
<image:caption>You think the pain you feel is normal, that it’s just something you have to live with, but you deserve relief. You deserve to take control of your thoughts. You deserve to be loved, by yourself and others. You deserve to find joy in the little things. You deserve a life worth living. I’m Emily, and I’m a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in helping millennials who feel lost and scared — no matter how strong and accomplished they are — re-connect with themselves and their dreams and discover what brings them joy and happiness. Most of my clients have been thinking about working with a therapist for a while, but they're not always sure their problems are serious enough to get help. They've been OK with how things are, even though things aren't really OK. Many of my clients have trust issues and want to make sure they're emotionally safe before opening up their hearts, which I honor and respect. After all, it's not always easy to shift from carrying the weight of your emotions alone to feeling vulnerable and trusting a therapist. My clients learn that it can be a profound experience to be heard with compassion and kindness. Most usually feel lighter and more hopeful after the very first counseling session, and always leave with at least one new idea to try out during the week. Doing this deep, healing work gives you a chance to slow down and reflect, and make fresh, new conscious choices. For a lot of clients, it’s their special “me” time every week. And they enjoy working virtually; it’s the most efficient and convenient way to juggle a busy schedule and there is a comfort being in your space while you talk about the hard stuff. People usually work with me once a week for an average of 12 months months. As we work together, you’ll be getting tools for long-term success, and learning and using strategies and techniques that will serve you for many years. You’ll work hard for sure. But it won’t all be horrible and terrible! I love sharing ideas about good books and movies and laughing together - humor is a big part of my therapeutic approach. My hope for you is that you’ll feel safe every step of the way.</image:caption>
